Guilt Free Biscuits

First of all, biscuit lovers, I must apologise for the lack of recent blogs.

Among many reasons, including the busy world of news in Bracknell allowing me little biscuit eating time this week, is that I have been conducting a scientific experiment.

I donned my white jacket and protective goggles (unnecessarily) to explore the world of healthy biscuits.

I started my investigation cynically. Biscuits are a guilty pleasure and we all know that guilty pleasures are the best kind.

The array of reduced fat biscuits I found in an unnamed Wokingham supermarket (the big one, not the expensive one) was impressive. There is a reduced fat equivalent for almost all the major biscuits.

For my test I opted to use chocolate digestives. For my guinea pigs I chose my biscuit hungry colleagues.

My reception when I returned to Bracknell Standard Towers clutching two packets of biscuits was enthusiastic. Enthusiasm turned to intrigue when I announced my experiment.

It has to be pointed out that the reduced fat biscuits had already made a poor start to the contest. They came in a smaller packet and cost more.

Neither packet lasted a long time, but after gobfuls were swallowed and crumbs swept away, I gathered some feedback.

To my surprise the low fat biscuits got a very good reception. One newshound said: “I like them. The biscuit underscores the chocolate better. It’s crispier and not as puddingy.”

Another said: “There’s more chocolate on the full fat ones. The light ones are all about the biscuit, the full fat ones are all about the chocolate.”

In general the consensus in the office was that the low fat ones tasted better.

Shows what they know. I thought the low fat ones tasted stale and hard. The chocolate was barely noticeable, as if they’d been placed on top of a warm wagon wheel, and they looked a funny colour. They were also not nearly as good for dunking in tea.

My editor hit the nail on the head with her observation: “If you look at the ingredients there’s not much fat in a biscuit anyway.

“They’re a bit of a con, like those Go Ahead biscuits that taste like vomit.”

This has drawn me to the conclusion that all biscuits are guilt free so there's no point in low fat ones.

Have you tried any low fat biscuits? What did you think of them? Is there even any point in them existing? Let me know.

Your editor sounds like she knows what she's talking about - those Go Aheads are rank!

There were these two biscuits walking down the road when one biscuit turns to the other biscuit and asks, "Hay mate", because he's a northener sorta biscuit y'see, "Where do you live?" The other biscuit turns to the first biscuit and replies "I'm not going to tell you that! You might come round and steal all my washing!"

Hello again Ken!

It's nice to hear from you but you've managed to tell a joke (I think) that none of us here get!
Care to explain?

Good afternoon champion of crumbs.

I came across it whilst randonmly searching for biscuits jokes on line (i know, how boring am i?).

Sadly my fellow biscuit companion, i'm just as lost as you are on it, but i thought i would send it your way in the hope you might have some knowledged on it.

Oh well - keep chomping!

Ken.

Fraid not Ken. I haven't the faintest idea what that could mean. I think it may be a slightly confused joke at the expense of Northerners.
If you come across any more (better) biscuit jokes let me know!
I feel a future Biscuit Blog special coming on...

You gotta love biscuits, regardless of their fat content.

Chocolate Rich Tea's are a personal favourite of mine, can you tell me if they come in a fat free variety? Because obviously the lesser the fat the more i can eat!

I like your style Carlton.
I think Rich Teas are pretty low in fat anyway so I'm not sure that they make a reduced fat version.
Just stuff your face regardless.

I agree with Mike. What is the point of low fat biscuits? It's like going to McDonalds or Pizza Hut for a salad. If you want to a biscuit, go for the full fat double chocolate kind, only then will it feel more satisfying.

I decided to follow Nicola's advice and as well as my healthy Digestives, I bought some butter shortbreads...sounds positively sinful and also Chocolate Crunchy cookies for when I was feeling really bad. Then, I read the fat contents:-
Digestives 23.5g/100, butter shortbreads 19.8 and Chocolate Crunchy cookies 22.6.
So, when I have been righteously eating digestives, I have been clogging my arteries and when I have been guilt ridden with my real butter shortbreads i've been de-toxing! I should add that al the biscuits were from the same manufacturer. My advice then is go for what sounds worse and you'll live to a ripe old age!

The biscuits are good to eat and they refresh our mind very well. I like especially the GOOD DAY biscuits.
