Run to the hills

I finally got to the point where I couldn’t find any more excuses. There is no longer any snow for me to slip on and break my neck. The road isn’t flooded. And that isn't the fabled Wokingham wildcat out on the prowl. It’s a man walking his dog.

So, reluctantly, I pulled on my trainers and started running again. I managed two runs last week – a total of about seven miles.

It was during the second of these that I realised that Wokingham, a town I used to think of as pretty flat, is actually littered with sneaky little hills.

There was one lying in wait for me by the train station. I’ve driven there thousands of times and never noticed it, lurking, waiting for innocent runners to demoralise.

There’s another one in Wokingham town centre. Coming from Tesco, under the railway bridge, and through Denmark Street.

Bracknell’s the same, they’re all over the place, long, shallow hills – they’re not steep, that would be better, they’re long, steady and back-breaking and until you’re running up one you don’t know they’re there.

I don’t think I’d mind so much if I knew when they were coming, it’s the unexpected ones that are really galling.

Have you found any of these devious hills? If so let me know where they are!
