A rest is as good as a run

By Lorna Catling

Today is one of my designated ‘rest days’. They are officially my favourite days of the week.

Apparently they are just as important to your training as your running days and mean that, even while I sit at my desk, I feel I am still actively doing something to get me half-marathon ready.

Even better, I managed to stagger round six miles on Saturday so I’m feeling pretty deserving of a rest now.

It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. The first mile was a bit rough, I find it very hard to motivate myself when I am still close to home.

But, once I turned the first corner I seemed to get into a bit of a stride (rhythmic stagger) and after that it went pretty well.

I tried to time myself on my ipod but it’s not the most accurate because I have to start the timer before I pick my music and then I find it hard to run while I’m choosing my songs (I’m not very co-ordinated).

Anyway, I think it took me just about one hour, which I’m pretty pleased with – I’d really like to do the half-marathon between two hours and two hours ten.

There’s still quite a bit of time before the actual race so I’ll need to get quicker by then – a few more rest days are definitely in order.
