Me and Merse..

Paul Merson was in town last night, that’s the former Arsenal and Portsmouth winger, not the acclaimed Have I Got News For You panellist Paul Merton as somebody (no names mentioned) thought.

Merson was hanging around as guest speaker at the annual Bracknell Town FC sporting dinner held at Blue Mountain Golf course, and what a brilliant evening it was.

There have been some good speakers in the past – Rodney Marsh, Graham Poll - and some duds (Big Ron Atkinson was dull) but Merson was refreshingly engaging and honest about his life and history of drink, drugs and gambling.

Merson spoke of how a succession of managers saved him from the brink, and how his move from Arsenal to Middlesborough was based purely on the doubling of his wage.

He also gave a fantastic insight into behind the scenes at Soccer Saturday, and how during his first game he was paying more attention to the scores than the game at Hull he was supposed to be viewing after he had put his mortgage on an accumulator, and made up reports from the KC Stadium.

Plenty of local companies support this event, including Romans estate agents, car hire firm Avis and St James Homes, and it was good to see such a big turn-out despite the tough times we are experiencing.

No word yet on how much was raised for the club but I got my picture taken with Merse so I’m pretty happy!
