Dangerous Liaisons

I've never had an argument with someone on a first date before...and I didn't think I ever would.

But when a 30-year-old tells you he's a coke head and thinks the government should legalise drugs so they can be sold alongside booze and cigarettes in bars, it leaves you a little bit annoyed that you wasted a London-bound train fare to meet him for a drink.

The problem with Internet dating is it sometimes sets you up for a fall.

You see a guy's profile, you like the look of him, you send him a message. You chat via the site, via email or, if you're brave enough, via text and during that time you get excited about the prospect of meeting this wonderful man in the flesh.

So when you eventually schedule a casual drink or romantic dinner, it's a huge let down when the guy is, for example, a drug addict.

But perhaps Internet dating isn't the only way of meeting people that comes coupled with risks - I suppose all dating carries an element of uncertainty.

A few months ago, my best friend signed me up for Sarah Beeny's mysinglefriend.com.

I was reluctant to put my profile online at first, thinking it would be a bit desperate.

But after a history of a distinct lack of success with men, I figured the guys I meet on the Internet couldn’t be any worse than some of those I’ve met in the real world. Anyway, I’m beginning to sound like some bra-burning shiksa feminista Emmeline Pankhurst figure so I’ll cut this post short.

But please indulge me with your attention for just a few seconds more…I’m glad I signed up because if I hadn’t my memory would not be playing host to the many stories I will be telling you over the next few weeks.

Stay tuned and you’ll read about a man who wrote me an love note from his dog, a pig farmer who composed a four-stanza poem about Cumberland sausages and a guy who looked like he wore more make-up than I do.
