Rustenburg – what an opener!

Okay, okay the result and performance was far from what we wanted. But the first of the games to be played in Rustenburg was brilliant. For many there was animosity surrounding the clash between England and USA, with the game being dubbed as a security risk. But after we went through fairly rigorous security scanners to get into the stadium the atmosphere was electric.

Thousands of Americans and English were packed in the beer squares outside the stadium enjoying the festivities with lots of mockery and banter taking place between the two sets of fans. By the time the anthems were being played we couldn’t wait to get our world cup campaign started and to follow England all the way to the final.

After a dream start thanks to our skipper we were soon brought back to reality. We were sluggish, slow and lethargic – nothing like the Germans have started as I am writing this blog, they are only playing Australia, but good god they look good.

Heskey missed some fairly straight forward chances and I know I don’t need to talk about Robert Green as it has probably been replayed countless times. The simple fact of the matter is that we were not good enough and just didn’t look as sharp as we should have been given the circumstances. But the second half performance gave us a better promise for the next game against Algeria in Cape town on Monday.

The only qualm of the Rustenburg set up was the efficiency of the coaching system outside of the stadium after the game, which is only a small point in the bigger picture. But we knew some Brits who were waiting in line for a good couple of hours after the game.

Afterwards we got back to our lodge and met up with some of our new found American and South African friends after the game, and oh lord they can pack away the pints!

A disappointing result but a fantastic start to the tournament.
